This is interesting to read from a purely academic perspective, but also from the perspective of working with about 60 students looking to graduate from their last year of high school in the US. It's hard to listen, engage, and try to forward a conversation away from "how do I/we do this better" at the prompt level, or "what do I need to purchase to get the agent to do it better", over to "does the end output help us reach the mission of why we're here in the first place". Is mission, whether for-profit or non-profit, individually focused or group-focused, civilian or government, a good word to use for your draw to "what is behind the surface"?
I'm just starting year three working within an AI and Ethics course with high school seniors in the US, and I am most grateful for finding your work through Substack and also the Narayanan/Kapoor work from AI is Normal Work from normaltech.ai
Good point about the Prompt Awe and Prompt Pray scenarios. I'm only a casual dabbler who started with Awe, and followed that with Prayers when things like six fingers and other slight impossibilities appeared. Any advice for a self-learner on the sequence of milestones to hit in a correct and realistic order of precedence? (I paint a bit, also untrained, and took me awhile to see you can't treat oil like watercolour and acrylics.) Cheers, S
I’ve a free ebook on what I recommend for learning AI. Can’t post links here but go to learn(dot)simplyboring(dot)ai and look for “The Boring Reading List for Learning AI”
Thanks for posting this - the "six fingers, r's in strawberry" phase of 2024-2025 was a distinct one, and it seems to be swiftly closed, would you agree?

Keep publishing, ty
Yes, we need to not have the young folks think a prompt is everything!
